For my performance piece I chose to do it with a friend in class. Basically we got giant animal heads and walked around campus for a bit getting peoples reactions.
Should have chosen a different spot to film in because college campuses are pretty used to seeing some weird stuff already. Also wish we could have gone longer. My favorite part was seeing the little kids near the end. They were so happy and waving at us. With everyones not really reacting much it just comes to show that being "unique" or "odd" is becoming normal.
One of my favorite artists who has done performance art would have to be Angela Su. Her work isn't simple and she puts great meaning into each piece she works on. They usually have pretty dark meanings dealing with rape or brutality of some sort however, she executes them so beautifully. My favorite piece from her is titled The Hartford Girl and Other Stories (http://angela-su.blogspot.com/p/thoughts-from-underground.html). I don't wanna give it away but its beautiful to me. In some of her works she has also interwoven technology. She has a piece where herself as a cartoon figure is raped. The piece is animated and in a never ending loop. So that she could publicly show that even though we heal on the outside what happens never goes away.
Another performance artist that I like coined the term "The Happening" they were so random and odd and literally made no sense. They are just fun to watch. Some of them had technology in the originals , more so now in the modern times with people bringing "the happenings" back more technological aspects have been added with machines.
Finally the most unique to me was the Triadic Ballet by Oskar Schlemmer, there are not many words to describe it. So I'll just leave this clip here. They use sounds to help their costumes tell the story they are showing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlIiT80dqHE
"What is to be done", is such a broad statement. If you look at it from some artists point of view anything can be done when one is doing performance art. To others there is a fine line in what is considered art and what is not. I believe it is all up to the individual person who is creating the art. That being said I also may slightly be on the fence because I know there are extreme versions of "performance art" that involve self harm and mutilation which I am highly against.
That being said if one feels like it is telling a story and proving a point and they think it is art then it is no matter what other may think after all we are in the time of Contemporary Art.
